Verizon 'early termination fee' is all wrong, customer says. Verizon told Jim DiOrio he owed a $170 early termination fee, but it later withdrew the fee as a mistake. One mistake by a Verizon employee almost cost Jim DiOrio $170. Verizon customers have 14 days after a contract is signed to cancel without facing early termination fees. If you don't cancel within the 14-day grace period, Verizon will assess a fee of up to $350 for breaking the contract. Restocking fees also apply to returned equipment, including cell phones and tablets. Verizon Wireless customers who cancel a line of service during the contract term will be subject to an Early Termination Fee. Cancelation of a smartphone device will have an Early Termination Fee of $350, which will decline by $10 per month upon completion of months 7–17, $20 per month upon completion of months 18–22, $60 upon completion of month 23 and will be $0 upon completion of the contract term. When you sign a two year contract with your wireless carrier, you probably know there's a termination fee if you want to get out early. You may think that fee could be waived if you could demonstrate a real need to end your contract, but this sad story suggests otherwise. Verizon will issue qualifying customers a bill credit (up to $500) in the exact amount of the Early Termination Fee that they are charged by their previous provider for disconnecting their service. A copy of your previous provider bill with the Early Termination Fee amount must be submitted to receive bill credit.

Verizon previously reduced the $350 early termination fee (ETF) by $10 per month for each full month of a contract that was honored, meaning that its delay in reducing the fee until the eighth month makes opting out of a contract up to $70 more expensive for customers.
